Comparison Of ATVs And Motorcycles As Modes Of Alternative Transport

All terrain vehicles or ATVs and motorcycles have things in common and things that differ. Some commonality if that each is a form of modified bicycle with a motor. The method of driving them is achieved by the driver sitting astride the vehicle, while using the handlebars to control speed and steering. They also have a number of differences which are mentioned below.
First of all are the numbers of wheels that are present on each type of vehicle. ATVs more commonly known as quad bikes and generally have four wheels, but may also be three-wheelers as well, whereas motorbikes have two wheels. The extra wheels on the quad bikes gives greater stability for the driver at slow speeds and over rough terrain, whereas the motorbikes, just as with bicycles require the rider to balance on the two wheels. Increased skill is needed on motorcycles at slow speeds.
Inventing the two popular did not happen simultaneously, in fact the motorcycle was invented a whole century before the common ATV, the quad bike. The motorcycle was created by Gottileb Daimler, who attached a gas engine to a wooden bike. The four-wheeled ATV was originally a beginner recreational machine.

Passengers are not allowed on quad bikes because the movement of bike is partially dependent on the readjusting of the weight of the driver. Therefore a passenger would interfere with these subtle but necessary changes increasing the possibility of accidents occurring. Motorcycles on the other hand are safer for transporting passengers.
Size: ATVs are bigger than motorcycles and therefore require more storage space and transportation space. Due to the restriction of use of ATVs on public roads, transportation trailers are necessary to get them to their intended destination. Motorbikes do not use up as much space during transportation, but are not restricted from public roads and so may be driven to the location.
In terms of off-road crashes, ATVs cause more serious injuries and deaths than motorbikes. This is most probably due to the fact that the quad bikes are heavier and can crush the driver during an accident. A large percentage of drivers disregard wearing helmets in comparison to the compulsory requirement for off-road bike drivers to do so.
Varying engine sizes are available for both types of vehicles, with varying ranges of power output dependent on the amount of power the driver wants. These vehicles are available in child sizes as well. Appropriate safety measures should be taken when a child is using their vehicle.
